SAWING OPTIONS

We offer several different sawing methods. Each has it's own advantages and disadvantages, but the most important factor is how you plan to use the wood. We will be happy to advise you on the best options prior to sawing.

combination
Sawing

Advantages

  • Most efficient way to cut square edge boards
  • Results in a combination of plain-sawn, quarter-sawn, and rift-sawn boards
  • Recommended for logs that are smaller than 14” in diameter
  • Best for cutting dimension lumber

Disadvantages

  • Lower yield when performed on large logs

Optimized
Plain Sawing

Advantages

  • Suited for any log, but larger is better
  • Results in boards with an appealing wood grain

Disadvantages

  • Takes roughly 50% more cuts than live-edge or combination sawing methods (i.e., more machine hours)
  • Plain-sawn boards are more prone to cupping

Optimized
Quarter-Rift Sawing

rift sawing

Advantages

  • Best suited for logs that are larger than 26” in diameter
  • Results in a good yield of quarter-sawn and rift-sawn boards

Disadvantages

  • Takes twice as long to cut than live-edge or combination sawing methods (i.e., more machine hours)
  • Narrower board widths than what is possible with other methods

Live-Edge
Sawing

Advantages

  • Most efficient sawing method
  • Highlights the natural edge of the boards
  • Best option for a high yield

Disadvantages

  • Sawblades need to be replaced more often (i.e., more machine hours)
